The purpose of the 55+ group is to help meet the needs of the older adults in our congregation. The leadership team (Bob & Elaine Schellenberg and Len & Iona Bachiu) seeks to find a balance through fellowship between learning and personal growth; physical health; laughter, fun, and enjoyment; service; and sharing our faith.
Our older adults are a very significant part of our congregation who never stop sharing their wisdom and doing service. This takes many forms both in the church and in the community: playing the piano and singing at nursing homes, hospitals, and other various events, relating to immigrant families, volunteering in community ministries, visiting the sick and lonely, being active prayer warriors, grandparenting and leaving a legacy, preparing a meal or doing repairs for someone in need, contributing financially to those in need, leading care groups, mentoring younger members, providing a listening ear … the list could go on and on. Our goal is to meet once a month.
Forever in Motion, our fitness program, provides an opportunity for exercise twice a week. It focuses on strength, balance, and flexibility. The Forever in Motion program is an exercise program for older adults, and it is promoted by the Saskatoon Health Region. It focuses particularly on exercises for physical capabilities that wane with age like balance, posture, range of motion, and strength. The exercises are designed so that people of varying abilities can perform them. For those who have difficulties standing, numerous exercises can be done while sitting. So, it is designed for all older people, including people with various health conditions. We offer the program twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays at 9:30am. Both days we perform the exercises for approximately 45 minutes. We encourage participants to practice the exercises on other days as well. On both days, after the exercise, we have a social time with coffee and connecting. On Mondays, after the coffee social time, we have a Bible study that goes for about one hour. Currently, we are studying the gospel of John.
From September to April we host Pickleball, which is the fastest-growing sport for seniors in North America. We play from 1:00 until 3:00 on Wednesday and Friday afternoons. A drop-in fee of $2 is charged to help cover the cost of materials.
We want to extend a warm welcome to those who are “of age” but have not yet taken the step to join our group. Come and check it out — we are young at heart!
