More on what kids are asking

February 24, 2009 by Jessica

I hope that you are all having a wonderful week!

I have a few more questions for you to ponder and provide some insight too!

1. How do we know when Jesus will return?

2.Has God ever healed someone in your family?

3.If Jesus appeared to you would he appear as a light or a normal person?

We are attempting to answer kids questions this coming Sunday!  I am really looking forward to this dialogue with the kids about their questions and this amazing God we serve!

Lead Pastor Blog I.I

I am heading off to a conference this weekend entitled: “How to Have an Effective Men’s Ministry.” Two other “men” from the church are joining me on this adventure. I must say I am excited but I am trying not to get my hopes/expectations too high. God has been at work in my heart over the past year about stepping up to the plate when it comes to this aspect of church life here at Cornerstone.

I have always had the blessing of having some kind of structured or casual ministry to men in our various locations. The structured part can be an actual men’s bible study and the casual part is the just hanging out together part. I love both of them.

When men seriously want to dive into God’s Word I am stoked to share that part of their life journey with them. When guys want to hang out and watch some sports or attend some sports function I enjoy that as well. I had some very interesting guy friends in my last place of ministry. I love the fact that on one occasion I thought for sure one of my unchurched friends was going to tear my head off because I was telling him he was too slow as we were golfing. It was one of those days where I wasn’t much acting like a believer and this guy was frustrated with me. The cool thing is that in the long run it did not affect our relationship in any way other than I learned not to get him upset because he was much bigger than me.

He said what he needed to say and I took note of his growing anger. I had first become friends with him as one of our more “fringe” type guys took me out golfing and introduced me to this guy. Over time we set up golf dates without our mutual friend and I knew at that time our friendship had reached a new level. I had a number of different conversations with the same guy while we were golfing or sometimes after we had finished golfing and went for dinner together. He asked about my beliefs and shared with me some of his doubts as well as his convictions. He actually asked me some questions about the Bible. I remember walking up the 17th fairway asnwering his questions and thinking this is so cool and natural. Not forced evangelism but rather true friendship stuff going on as the Holy Spirit led.

If this conference has some great ideas about that kind of men’s ministry I will know the time and effort will have been well spent. We are going to be raising the bar as far as what we are doing in this aspect of church life here at Cornerstone. We want to challenge our guys to go deeper in their walk and have more fun in their relationships. One of the key factors in seeing a men’s ministry grow is laughter. Get a bunch of guys together there had better be some belly shaking laughter or else it’s not going to last very long.

So, that’s about it for now. Trust the Lord is throwing some crazy ideas into that cranial cavity of yours we call a brain. Wrestle and have some fun with it.

Blessings……..Russ

Lead Pastor Blog

Let me start with just some random thoughts. I am looking forward to sharing with you through this venue over the coming months…years?? I am excited about what God is doing at Cornerstone Church. We have a great mixture of ages with God doing some cool stuff in the various age brackets. Having been at Cornerstone for just over a year now I feel like I am seriously starting to get a sense of the pulse of this body of believers and potential believers.

If you look at another section of this website you will read some very thought provoking questions that come from our children’s ministry department. Those questions tell you that God is at work in the hearts of our kids and that He better be at work in the hearts of our leaders if they are going to answer the questions. I think there is much to learn from our children about our relationship with God. Things like trust and simplicity and awe. Just basic stuff but good stuff. Do you know what I mean?

I am looking forward to my youngest daughter coming home from Victoria for a weekend soon. She makes me think and often puts a smile on my face with her interesting approach to life. She just doesn’t settle and I think that is a great thing.

This weekend I will be in Manitoba with my wife visiting her mother while I engage in some long term planning. That is going to take a lot of thinking. Thankfully I am one of the blessed ones who really does enjoy a wonderful realtionship with his mother-in-law so the time there will be healthy for me to do some thinking.

I have a bazillion thoughts banging around in my head most days.  Half the time I am just asking God which of these do you want me hold on to or chase for a while? I do not get frustrated by this. I figure it is just who I am so I have joyfully embraced this part of my walk with the Father. It is during those times that I truly feel like His child. Here I am Father with all these thoughts and questions. Let’s just spend some time together and I will fire some questions your way God.

As you are visiting our site online feel free to visit our physical location. No perfection here…I guarantee you that much. Hopefully you will find other imperfect people on a journey that connects and separates throughout the week until we meet back togther on Sundays.  We see ourselves as fellow travelers who are always open to others joining us at this stage of the journey.  It is my job on Sundays to send some thoughts as well as challenges out to the travelers.  Come and be challenged with us.

I trust you find yourself thinking about God and His ways as well. Give it some thought and send us some feedback.

Blessings……..Russ

On Autopilot?

autopilot For those involved in Music & Arts at Cornerstone, it’s time for a new schedule for our music teams.  Here’s a scripture that I’ve been thinkng about as winter seems to drag on and we get caught up in the mid winter blues.

He put a new song
in my mouth,
a hymn of praise
to our God.
Psalms 40:3 NIV

Ever felt like your life is just passing you by; that somewhere in your mind you’ve hit this big button and are living your life on autopilot? As human beings we always have this tendency toward habit or custom. In worship we can find ourselves automatically singing the same songs over and over without our head or heart taking much notice of what’s going on.

In our heads, we know that the creator God, Lord of the universe is anything but mundane. If we are living truly sensitive to the spiritual, we see that God will constantly interrupt the routine in our lives and show us He is infinitely worth of glory honour and praise.

So as leaders and musicians look for ways to allow God to speak to you outside of routine. Change it up! Go outside, read a new author, meet a new friend. Discover a new part of God’s great world and a new way to worship him!

What kids are thinking about…

February 6, 2009 by Jessica

As my first post I wanted to share with parents/guardians what questions your kids are asking and what kind of things are on their minds!

We had prayer stations at Tidal Wave a couple of weeks ago and kids wrote prayers such as:

“I am so happy that when I prayed for the girl at school to stop bullying people and she did”

“Thank you for people so that they could make the stuff I like so much”

“Why does there have to be war and hurting people?”

In Promiseland we have a “BIG questions” box where kids have been encouraged to ask any questions.  I encourage you to comment if you have helpful answers to these questions!  Some are really stumping us because they are sometimes complex and difficult to explain to an 8 year old!  We will be ‘answering’ these questions on March 1.

Elementary Kids questions:

1. Is there a pet heaven?

2. How many kinds of churches are there?  I only know three, catholic, mennonite & baptist.

3. How big is heaven?

4. Is the name God different in different languages?

5. Do you ever feel like God doesn’t love you?

6. How does God make & create Promiseland games?  It would be hard.

7.How many times a day do people sin?

8. Is heaven outside of space?

9. Jesus says to love your enemies.  Does Jesus love the devil?

10. How does God make each snow flake different?

These are not all the questions!  Kids just kept writing & writing!  They want to talk about it, they have questions and as parents/teachers/guardians, it’s okay if we don’t have the answers but it is important to engage your kids in these kind of conversations.  Encourage questioning about God and their faith because when is it bad to dwell on God and who he is?
